Hey Winstigators,

My wife and a good buddy of mine were headed to the excellent Silverada show at Bright Box on Saturday evening when we were trying to figure out where to eat on the Walking Mall. After lots of hemming and hawing and indecision, my wife took control of the situation and decided on Fuego Tacos & Mezcal that opened last month.

For those of you who don’t know (I sure didn’t!), Fuego Tacos & Mezcal is owned by the same team that owns the essential Taqueria Guadalajara. It sits right outside of the Walking Mall to the North by about a block.

I’m glad my wife made the decision for us because it was excellent. The chips and salsa were on point and I had three steak tacos in a guajillo chili sauce that I’d gladly order again. My wife said the sea bass is some of the best she’s ever had and my friend raved about his enchiladas. The margaritas were also fantastic!

History fans will appreciate the location: Fuego is situated the old Sarah Zane Fire Company building. Sarah Zane, originally from Philadelphia, spent most of her life in Winchester. When she passed in 1821, she left $1,000 for the city to buy a fire engine and hose, leading to the founding of the Sarah Zane Fire Company in 1840—Winchester’s first organized fire brigade.
