Hey Winstigators,
My wife and I were out last Friday running errands on our respective lunch breaks, knocking things off the list before the weekend. One of those stops was Gore’s down in Stephens City as I had plans to smoke a pork shoulder over the weekend.
We pulled into the parking lot and right as I was about to park, she goes, “I’m hungry…I could really go for sushi right now. Is that place any good?”
She was looking a few doors down at Sake Sushi. It’s a place I’ve driven past for years and never once thought about stopping in. On the outside, it’s very unassuming…all you see outside is a nondescript fish next to the big red letters SAKE SUSHI with nothing else to captivate you.
Normally, lunch decisions get filtered through the very specific and very limited preferences of our four year old son (spaghetti, hot dogs, tacos and Chick-Fil-A) so sushi sounded like a great change of pace since he was at daycare. No negotiations. No “I don’t like that,” before even trying it.
Still, I hesitated. Sushi is one of those things where it can be incredible or a complete mistake with a wrong roll of the dice.
“Check the reviews,” I said.
She pulled it up. “Four and a half stars on Google. Let’s go.”
We walked in, and the “unassuming” label immediately felt accurate. It’s dim. The furniture looks like it’s been there for decades. Nothing about the place is trying to impress you. If you’re chasing ambiance, you’re going to be disappointed.
We sat down, opened the menus, and that’s when things started to shift a bit. This isn’t just a sushi place…it’s everything. Hibachi, teriyaki, tempura, noodles, fried rice, bento boxes…page after page of options. The kind of menu where you realize pretty quickly you could come back multiple times and order something completely different every time.
We kept it simple; shrimp tempura and a few sushi rolls and the food came out faster than expected.
The tempura hit the table first and it was one of those immediate “okay, this is legit” moments. Light and crispy, not greasy and well seasoned. It was the kind of appetizer where you finish it and think, “forget my main meal, just give me more of that.” I could have had another couple orders of it for lunch and was wishing that I had.
Then the sushi came out and this is where the whole experience really took off. The rolls were fresh and clean. Put together the way they should be; not falling apart, not drowning in sauce and not trying too hard to be something they’re not. Just really solid, well-made sushi. The portion sizes were right, the flavor was on point and everything tasted like it was handled with care. I’m not a sushi expert like my wife is, but she said that this was quality that you’d find closer to DC than you would in the Valley.
And then the bill came and that was the final piece. For how good everything was, it didn’t feel expensive. We walked out full, happy and not questioning our life choices over a lunch tab.
Nothing about Sake sets you up for how good it actually is. From the outside, it’s easy to ignore. Inside, it’s not winning any awards for atmosphere. But the food quietly over delivers in a way that sticks with you; later in the afternoon we were still commenting on how the tempura and sushi hit just right. We’ll definitely be going back.
If you’re looking for good Asian food around Winchester and want to mix it up from the usual rotation like Chinatown or Chopsticks, check out Sake Sushi. It’s well worth the short drive to Stephens City.
