📰 The Winchester Wire: 🥖 Fresh Bread, 🐾 Furry Friends & 🍂 Fall Events

Earlier today I went to one of my favorite stops in Winchester, Knead Bread. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Knead Bread is located at 28 E. Piccadilly, a stone’s throw from the downtown Walking Mall.

It’s a fantastic bread shop and you’ll find plenty of well crafted breads here such as focaccia, sourdough, peasant, and baguettes. The pastries have always been on point as the hand pies and danishes have consistently been a favorite of my wife’s and for my money, you won’t find a better chocolate chip cookie anywhere.

But Knead Bread isn’t just about the bread and the pastries; it’s a fantastic sandwich shop that does savory just as well as they do sweet. However, I’ve only been there for breakfast sandwiches (egg, thick cut bacon, mozzarella, pesto on sourdough) on weekend mornings with my family and I’ve never bothered to treat myself to lunch.

Since today’s my birthday, I decided to change that. I left the Winchester Wire compound and headed downtown to lunch, fully preparing to order a club sandwich or an Italian sub but as soon as I walked into the shop, my plans went out the window.

When you hit the door at Knead Bread, the options to choose from can be overwhelming since everything looks fantastic. And sitting on top of the counter were trays of freshly made open face sandwiches and other treats that quickly made me forget any thoughts of a club sandwich or an Italian sub.

The first thing that caught my eye was the bacon provolone on sourdough. Not quite a pizza, but not quite a sandwich, it just looked awesome and I had to try it. And it didn’t disappoint, with a generous helping of bacon and fresh cut provolone on a thick slice of sourdough that was crunchy on the outside and buttery soft on the inside. Tremendous.

Next up was the “loaded cinnamon bun." At first glance, it didn’t even look like one but since I’m a cinnamon bun aficionado, I had to try it. What came out was ham, bacon, and mozzarella cheese piled high on a thinly sliced cinnamon bun drizzled with cinnamon sauce. The combination of savory and sweet was simple perfection; I never would have thought to put ham and bacon on a cinnamon bun but it worked.

That’s the magic you can find at Knead Bread: the vision and the creativity is exceptional. If you want to play it safe, you can get your standard favorites or if you’re looking to try something that’s different and creative, they have that too. I can’t recommend this place enough!
