Winchester Wire #031: Pancake Day review, Northern Lights, homes of the week and more.

Hey Winstigators,
Last week I included a link to an event but didn’t think much of it; it was the Community Pancake Day held at Jim Barnett Park in Winchester on Saturday at 8am. I mean, I love pancakes as much as anyone, but I can make a pretty mean stack right here at Winchester Wire HQ.
But what caught my eye was the facebook post that my wife (who was out of town) sent me the day before the event:

$11 for all you can eat pancakes and sausage for me and my son? While I usually enjoy a quiet Saturday morning breakfast at home, I also recognize a damn good deal when I see one. And when that sausage comes from Gore’s? Even better.
If you don’t know, Gore’s is arguably the best butcher shop in the area. Located in Stephens City, it’s a family owned business that’s been around for over 50 years. When I need to smoke a pork shoulder or some ribs or want some thick steaks or a great burger blend, it’s where I go and I don’t have to think twice about it. On top of that, the staff is always friendly and helpful and the prices are fair. It’s one of my favorite places around.
So my son and I headed out to the War Memorial Building at Jim Barnett Park, arriving shortly after 8am and it was filling up fast with a long line of people waiting for breakfast.

Breakfast hit the spot and set the tone for the weekend. The pancakes were light and fluffy, expertly served up by the Kiwanis members and volunteers. And the sausages from Gore’s? As good as expected and we definitely went back for seconds.
And it all went for a great cause, too. The Kiwanis Club sets up a Pancake Day in the spring and fall of each year which are their two major fundraisers. The money raised on each Pancake Day goes to grants for service organizations in the community, scholarships and to support kids in need. For each Pancake Day, Winchester Kiwanis partners with a local organization that’s designated as the major beneficiary and their responsibility is to help with the setup and serving and then they receive a percentage of the net proceeds at the end of the day. The major beneficiary for this particular Pancake Day was Froggy’s Closet, a Winchester based non-profit that focuses on providing essential items to children who are fostered, at risk, or in need.
All in all, It was a great morning for a great cause. Be on the lookout for the spring Pancake Day, and you can be sure I’ll highlight it here more prominently next time.
Northern Lights visible tonight?
I’m hesitant to to drop a reddit link in the middle of the newsletter, but check out this thread about the Northern Lights and the possibility of seeing them tonight if you’re interested.
