Fellow Winstigators,
This past weekend, my wife and I were invited to a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s classic musical “On The Town” at Shenandoah University. “On The Town” is a story about three World War II sailors that have just 24 hours to spend in New York City and explore everything the town has to offer. It’s a great mix of romance and comedy with big band jazz and swing music from the era.
I’m typically not one for musicals, but the performance was fantastic. I’d been to concerts at SU before but never seen a musical put on by the students at the conservatory. Before the show started, a student came out to welcome us to the program and informed us that the performance was a part of a capstone project for the seniors. Directed by Kevin Covert, choreographed by Shylo Martinez and under the musical direction of Patrick Brady, the performance was classic and fresh with clever set design and impressive special effects. At two and a half hours, it moved briskly and kept the audience engaged with humor, energy and great musicianship.
Beyond the performance, ticket sales, donations and sponsorships directly support Shenandoah’s performing arts students; helping fund scholarships, productions and future opportunities on and off stage.
I’ve included a bunch of Shenandoah University events in the Winchester Wire before, but I wanted to take a moment to highlight that we’ve got a performing arts powerhouse right in our backyard that’s absolutely worth checking out. Unfortunately, the run of “On The Town” has wrapped, but you can check out what’s ahead at Shenandoah University Conservatory.
